COSST expecting lighting fast-times at Craddock Invitational

By: Monica P. Dixon, Public Relations for COSST ’09-‘10

It was a hot August afternoon during the beginning of the 2009-2010 swim season when I approach Butch Jordan, the head coach of the City of Shreveport Swim Team (COSST), about attending the Craddock Invitational hosted by the Delta Aquatic Team in my hometown, Cleveland, Mississippi.  Coach Jordan, who was starting his 34th year as the head coach for COSST and who is also the men’s and women’s head swim coach at Centenary College in Shreveport seemed very interested in my request.  He has traveled to the delta with Centenary Swim Team and really liked the Aquatic Center.  Within a few weeks the Cleveland swim-meet was approved and for the first time in over 50 years of competition COSST would travel to flat lands of the Mississippi delta in search of “lighting fast” short-course state times as well as personal best times in the state of the art Aquatic Center on the campus of DSU.

As the short-course swim season has progressed, Coach Patrick Oathout has expressed that he is looking forward to traveling to Cleveland and mentioned, “The kids really enjoy swimming against new teams and faster competition.”  “Cleveland presents an excellent opportunity for our swimmers to achieve or better their state cuts.”  “With the facility at Delta State we are looking for some great times,” says Coach Derrek Amidon about the Craddock Meet.  Both coaches also have children that will be competing at the meet.  “As coaches we hope the kids are up to the challenge,” explained Coach Oathout.  For me, with Cleveland being my hometown, it is exciting to be back in Cleveland where I can enjoy my family and friends with the added excitement of them getting to watch and cheer my swimmer, Denver Dixon, on too!  So many of the kids have heard me say, “You’ll get that cut in Cleveland because they have a really fast pool!”

A total of 56 City of Shreveport Swim Team members will attend the three day Craddock Invitational from January 29th through the 31st.  Most swimmers attending this meet already have a few state-qualifying times or are really close to getting them.  For COSST this is the next to the last opportunity for each swimmer to get their “fastest state-qualifying times,” as our Short-Course State meet is scheduled for March 11 – 14th on the campus of the University of  New Orleans.

2009 ~ COSST “B” Meet

By:  Monica P. Dixon, Public Relations 2009-2010

The annual COSST B Short-Course Meet was held Saturday, October 24th, on the campus of Centenary College.  This annual meet is a fantastic opportunity for all swimmers who have not yet qualified for a State Time and does not have a B time or higher in their events .   All swimming results are measured by age group motivational standard times and are listed in A or B times determined by USA Swimming in each state.  During the COSST B Meet, any swimmer participating with a B time or higher in a particular event becomes ineligible for that particular event.  This strategy allows for swimmers to get better in other events and improve their times.

The COSST B Meet had a record number of over 42 new COSST swimmers attending their first USA Swim meet.  There were a total of 147 COSST swimmers which resulted in 19 new State Cuts for the team and many swimmers with new personal best achievements.  There were a total of 247 competitors including COSST.  Shreveport was excited to compete against swimmers from Longview, Texas, Texarkana, Arkansas, Alexandria, Monroe, Ruston and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The City of Shreveport Swim Teams continues on its quest to ensure every swimmer is working towards not only their personal best, but their goal of qualifying as many swimmers for the Short-Course State Championship Meet in New Orleans, in March 2010.  COSST will be in action at Centenary College again this Saturday as they have their annual COSST Booster Club “Swim-a-thon.”

“Anchors Away”

By:  Monica P. Dixon, Public Relations for COSST 2009-2010

It was “Anchors Away” at the recent , City of Shreveport Swim Team’s (COSST) Intrasquad Meet,  held at the Southside Swim Club on Saturday, September 19th.    Over 120 COSST swimmers were ready for the duel in the pool.  The clouds broke way to the warm September sun making perfect weather for the Red verses Blue battle to begin.

Fun and unpredictable relays which combined the varsity and pre-varsity swimmers with the younger junior varsity swimmers made for excitement for everyone.   A favorite event required a stronger older swimmer to only use his arms while a younger swimmer would hold on tight to his teammate’s legs and kick.  The event created great team work as the swimmers worked together to become one swimmer.    At the end of the swimming competition it was determined that a tie breaker would be needed to have a final winner.  This took both teams out of the water to several tug-a-war matches.  The excited spectators consisting of family, friends, and teammates cheered during these dry-land battles.

The Blue team was successful at defeating the Red team in the final round.   The Red Team cheered in great praise and wonderful sportsmanship for their Blue Team competitors.  Fellowship followed with food and refreshments for everyone.

The COSST Anchors Away event kicked-off the beginning of the 51st swim season.  A record breaking 200 plus kids ages from 6 to 18 are now in training with COSST under the direction of head coach Butch Jordon, now in his 34th year at the helm.  With the dedicated coaching staff of over 10 coaches, involved parents and committed swimmers they are expecting a fantastic winning season in 2009 - 2010.  For more information on COSST please visit their website at www.COSST.org.
